Doubles Sweep Leads to Women's Tennis Win

LAKE NONA, Fla. – The St. Mary's Women's Tennis team kept the momentum going with a 5-2 victory against #34 St. Thomas Aquinas on Thursday.

For the fourth-straight match on the Florida swing the Rattlers (12-3) took the early lead by winning the doubles point.

All three teams were victorious in building the 1-0 edge for the Rattlers. Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) and Kyndall Quiroz (San Antonio) won 6-1 at #1, Bailey Godwin (San Antonio) and Angela Vargas (Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico) won 6-2 at #2 and Gabi Ioannou (Melbourne, Australia) and Stela Sifuentes (Eagle Pass, Texas) were victorious 6-4 at #3.

"It was great to get a doubles sweep to start us off today," Director of Tennis Bill Macom said. "Because there were some tough mental battles in singles. Fortunately, we pulled out four of the matches with some high-level tennis."

The four singles matches the Gold & Blue won were all decided in straight sets as Ioannou at No. 4 and Godwin at No. 6 only dropped three games each in identical 6-1, 6-2 scores.

Vargas' opponent doubled the total from the first two finishers, but her 6-2, 6-4 victory at #2 singles clinched the victory for StMU.

The Spartans won the next two points in three-set thrillers but Penshorn pulled out a tiebreak win in the second set for the 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) tally at #1 for the 5-2 final team score.

The Rattlers close out the Spring Break trip on Friday hoping for the same great weather they had on Thursday as they face Palm Beach Atlantic at 11 a.m.
