Women's Tennis Dominant in First Win of Florida Trip

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The St. Mary's Women's Tennis team started the Florida Spring Break road trip with a dominant 7-0 performance at Eckerd on Monday afternoon.

The 17th-ranked Rattlers improved to 9-3 on the year as the team dropped only nine games throughout the 12 sets in singles action and all three doubles teams won by at least one break of serve.

Sophomore Bailey Godwin (San Antonio) and senior Angela Vargas (Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico) improved to 5-1 this year and 3-1 in duals with their 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles.

Senior Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) and junior Elena Munoz (Corregidora, Queretaro, Mexico) played doubles together for the first time this season but had little issues in a 6-3 win at No. 1 to clinch the point for the Rattlers. Senior Gabi Ioannou (Melbourne, Australia) and freshman Stela Sifuentes (Eagle Pass, Texas) moved to 2-0 on the year with their 6-4 victory at No. 3.

Once the courts were cleared after a spring shower rolled through the area, the Rattlers continued to dominate in singles play.

The trio of Munoz (#4), Godwin (#5) and Sifueuntes (#6) each won 12 straight games for 6-0, 6-0 victories.

Vargas at #2 and Ioannou at #3 each only lost one game in each set, posting identical 6-1, 6-1 wins and Penshorn won 6-4, 6-1 at #1 for the sweep over the Tritons (2-8).

St. Mary's plays a pair of foes on Wednesday, facing Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 10 a.m. and Bentley at 2:30 p.m. The Rattlers also play St. Thomas Aquinas on Thursday and Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday before returning home from Florida.
