Women's Tennis Ready for Cross Town Foe on Saturday

NET POINTS

•    St. Mary's opens the home portion of the spring season hosting Our Lady of the Lake on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. 

•    The Rattlers kicked off the dual match campaign with a 9-0 victory at Schreiner. Both Alessia Terlizzi and Callah Preti at No. 5 and 6 singles never dropped a game, winning 6-0, 6-0. Terlizzi also paired with fellow freshman Stela Sifuentes at No. 3 doubles for the 8-0 victory. Ashley Penshorn only dropped one game and the other three singles players only lost two games each in their straight set victories.

•    StMU is 4-0 all-time against Our Lady of the Lake.  This will be the first meeting between the teams since 2015 after last year's match was cancelled.

•    In the first national rankings of the spring, St. Mary's sits at #12, one spot behind Lone Star Conference foe Cameron in 11th. 

•    St. Mary's was well represented in the final fall ITA individual rankings. Senior Ashley Penshorn is ranked #1 in the South Central Region and #12 nationally, while she and doubles partner Kyndall Quiroz are first in the region and seventh in the nation. Senior Angela Vargas ranks seventh in the region, while freshman Stela Sifuentes ranks 13th, senior Gabi Ioannou is right behind her in 14th and Quiroz holds down 18th. Vargas and Bailey Godwin are also sixth in double

•    At the ITA South Central Regional, senior Ashley Penshorn won the main draw of singles, sophomore Bailey Godwin won the B draw, Penshorn and junior Kyndall Quiroz won the main draw doubles while junior Elena Munoz and sophomore Elisa Rodriguez won the B draw, giving the Rattlers all four titles for the week.

•    Rattlers singles players have won the ITA Regional title each of the last three seasons it has been competed as Ashley Penshorn won the titles in 2019 and 2022 and Maria Garcia won it in 2021. StMU also had back-to-back singles champions in Ally Maciel (2016) and Jamie Lee Denton (2015), while doubles teams won three straight in Hannah Peterson/Tyra Timm (2016), Denton/Kaylin Kruseman (2015) and Mariana Rong/Cristina Lopez (2014).

•    The Rattlers return seven letterwinners off last season's NCAA Round of 16 team, including fifth-year senior Ashley Penshorn and Lone Star Tournament MVP Angela Vargas. StMU also welcomes four freshmen and junior transfer Kyndall Quiroz from Midwestern State.
