LUBBOCK, Texas – A career-high 22 points by freshman
Gabby Elliott wasn't enough to lift the St. Mary's Women's Basketball team to its first-ever win at the Rip Griffin Events Center, as the Rattlers fell 60-46 to Lubbock Christian.
Â
Elliott, a freshman forward from San Antonio, was 8-for-14 from the field and 6-for-7 at the free throw line for 22 points, bettering her previous career high of 20 from Dec. 1 against Western New Mexico. She was the only Rattler (7-19, 3-17 Lone Star) in double digits during the game, however junior
Teanna Huggins (San Antonio) added seven. The pair also combined for 13 of the team's 30 rebounds on the day.
Â
Huggins also led the team with two assists, while junior
Jaedyn Dunn (Houston) paced the team with two steals.
Â
While the Rattlers never held more than a three-point lead on the Lady Chaps (20-8, 14-5 Lone Star) they pushed them the entirety of the day. Grace Foster led LCU with 11 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.
Â
After a slow start to the game, the Rattlers responded with 22 points in the second quarter to knot the game at 26 at the break. Elliott scored 10 of her 22 points in the second period, while junior
Ariah Powell (Detroit, Mich.) and Huggins each scored four as the team shot 50 percent from the field.
Â
The Rattlers also shot 44.4 percent in the fourth quarter, but only took nine shots and were unable to complete the comeback.
Â
St. Mary's closes out the 2022-23 season with two games next week against rival, St. Edward's. The Rattlers will be in Austin on Tuesday and host the Hilltoppers on Thursday. Both games are scheduled to tip at 5:30 p.m. and Thursday will honor seniors
Tonia Bilic,
Bella Hughes and
Briley Perkins.
