Seventh Inning Antics Leads to Saturday Split for Baseball

SAN ANTONIO – In both games of the doubleheader at Dickson Stadium on Saturday, teams scored in the seventh inning for victories as the St. Mary's Baseball team split a doubleheader with UAFS.

The Lions (5-4, 3-4 Lone Star) scored three in the seventh of game one to win 4-3, while each team scored one in the seventh as the Rattlers (4-7, 4-7 Lone Star) walked off game two by the identical score. The Rattlers opened game two with two runs in the first, the Lions tied things in the fourth. StMU scored one in the sixth before UAFS answered with one in the seventh.

Freshman Jacob King (San Antonio) singled up the middle to get things started in the seventh. After a pitching change, senior Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) successfully sacrificed King to second and he scored on a single through the right side off the bat of junior Clay Braford (Atascocita, Texas).

Bradford drew two walks in game one and was 2-for-4 in game two. He also pitched six innings in the first contest, giving up three runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts in a no decision.

Junior Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) had an outstanding day at the plate, going 4-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored. Parrish played first base in the early game and caught the nightcap, hitting his first home run in the third inning of game one.

Senior John Curtis (Athens, Tenn.) started on the hill in game two, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings. He also had no decision as senior Connor Schmidt (Devine, Texas) pitched 0.2 innings, giving up one hit.

The two teams conclude the four-game series on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
