Shooting Woes Hurt Women's Basketball

SAN ANTONIO – The free throw yips hit the St. Mary's Women's Basketball team on Saturday afternoon in yet another close battle in Lone Star Conference action, falling 49-44 to UAFS.

St. Mary's (7-17, 3-15 Lone Star) shot just 23.7 percent for the game and 51.9 percent at the free throw line one game after connecting on a season-best 91 percent on Thursday.

The team out-rebounded the Lions (8-17, 6-13 Lone Star) 51-to-39 on the afternoon with freshman Gabby Elliott (San Antonio), junior Teanna Huggins (San Antonio) and sophomore Faith Phillips (San Marcos, Texas) all bringing down 10 caroms each.

Elliott led the team in scoring with 16 points, collecting her fifth double-double of the year and she was the only Rattler in double figures as points came at a premium for both schools.

San Antonio native Aaliyah Prince led the game with 17 points for the Lions, while Kayla Brundidge grabbed 11 rebounds.

Each team scored 20 points in the paint, and the Rattlers made the most of their second chances, scoring 14 off 21 offensive rebounds, while holding the Lions to two second chance points.

The Rattlers play three of their final four games of the season on the road, hosting St. Edward's in the regular season finale on Thursday, Feb. 23 against rival St. Edward's. StMU plays its next game Feb. 16 at West Texas A&M.
