Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

It's Not How You Start, It's How You Finish and WBB Finished Strong

SAN ANTONIO — After a slow start, the St. Mary's Women's Basketball team shot lights out in the second half to complete the comeback and win its second-straight game with a 70-67 decision against Midwestern State on Wednesday.

St. Mary's (2-5, 2-1 Lone Star Conference) shot 60 percent from the field (18-for-30) after the break and held the Mustangs (0-9, 0-3 Lone Star) without a three-pointer (0-for-7) in the second stanza and just 1-for-15 (6.7%) in the game. The Rattlers trailed by as many as 18 with 8:55 on the clock in the third period (46-28)

The pair of TH's on the Rattlers roster, freshman Taylor Haggan (Parker, Texas) and senior Teanna Huggins (San Antonio) combined to score 44 points, including 26 in the second half. Both players recorded career-highs in scoring with 24 for Haggan and 20 for Huggins. Huggins notched career-highs in back-to-back games after tallying 19 in the win at Eastern New Mexico on Saturday.

Huggins also led the game with six assists and has collected five or more in three of the last four games. She also tied for team-high honors with nine rebounds, grabbing eight on the defensive end of the floor.

Senior Ariah Powell (Detroit, Mich.) narrowly missed a double-double, scoring nine points with eight rebounds – and she added four assists.

The Mustangs jumped out early, going to the hot hand, Zarria Carter, who ended with 33 points and nine rebounds. Makayla Coy added 15 points and nine rebounds. The duo had 32 of the team's 42 points in the first half, but the Rattler defense limited them to 16 in the second half.

Part of the reason for the turnaround was the Rattlers crashing the boards. The team was outrebounded by six in the first half, 27-to-21, but ended the game up two in the column, 43-to-41.

MSU led the game for 34:11, with StMU leading for only 1:01.

The Rattlers remain at home, hosting Cameron at 1 p.m. on December 12 in the final home game of the calendar year.
