Haggans Posts Double-Double in First Collegiate Game for WBB

GOLDEN, Colo. — In her collegiate debut, St. Mary's Women's Basketball player Taylor Haggans posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds and led the team with three assists in an 81-68 loss to 18th-ranked Colorado School of Mines on Friday afternoon.

Haggan, a true freshman from Parker, Texas, went 6-for-7 from the free throw line in 33 minutes of play. Senior Teanna Huggins (San Antonio) added 15 points, while junior Sheridan Kavanagh (Melbourne, Australia) chipped in nine.

The double-double for Haggan is the first for a freshman in a season opener since Hannah Wilson had 10 points and 11 rebounds on Nov. 10, 2017 against Texas Woman's.

Ashley Steffeck paced the Orediggers (1-0) with 24 points, six rebounds, four assists and five steals, as she sank five three-pointers. Both Shelby Nichols and Quincey Baum scored 10.

The Rattlers (0-1) held a 16-15 edge after the first quarter, while the Orediggers tallied six more points in the second quarter to take a 34-29 lead into the locker room at halftime. The flow of the game slowed considerably in the third quarter as 19 fouls were called and 27 free throws were attempted. In the final stanza, the Gold and Blue outscored CSM by two, 25-to-23, making eight of nine at the charity stripe.

This is the third-straight season the two teams have met in the South Central Regional Crossover and the Orediggers won the first two meetings by an average of 33.5 points and the 13-point spread is the closest in the series between the two teams.

The Rattlers play Regis on Saturday at Colorado School of Mines at 11 a.m. Central/10 a.m. Mountain.
