GOLDEN, Colo. — A pair of St. Mary's University Women's Basketball freshmen combined for 37 of the team's 62 points, but it wasn't quite enough as the Rattlers dropped a 69-62 decision to Regis early on Saturday.
Â
Taylor Haggans (Parker, Texas) became the first freshman in school history to record double-doubles in her first two games and the first at St. Mary's to record back-to-back 20-point scoring games since Soteria Banks in 2017-18. Banks scored 26 against Oklahoma Christian on Jan. 13 and followed it up with 25 against Rogers State on Jan. 18.Â
Â
Fellow freshman
Ramsey Robledo (San Antonio) added a career-high 15 points, coming off the bench to hit three three-pointers and go a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line.
Â
Junior transfer
Sheridan Kavanagh (Melbourne, Australia) scored double digits for the first time in the Gold and Blue, collecting 10 points with four offensive rebounds and senior
Ariah Powell (Detroit, Mich.) came off the bench to lead the team with three assists.
Â
The Rattlers (0-2) held the lead for over 12 minutes in the game but were never able to pull away from the Rangers (2-0). They held a four-point advantage in the first quarter but Regis answered with a nine-point run to hold a 15-12 lead at the break.Â
Â
St. Mary's outscored Regis by four in the second quarter, taking a one-point lead into the locker room at the break. The third quarter proved tough for StMU as they were outscored by nine, but the team continued to fight, beating the Rangers 18-to-17 in the final quarter.
Â
The Rattlers host the return of the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic on Black Friday and Saturday. Missouri Western State, Oklahoma Baptist and Texas A&M Kingsville will be in town. Game on Friday are at 4 and 6 p.m., while Saturday's contests are at 2 and 4 p.m.
