Women's Soccer Improves to 4-1 in LSC Play With Win Over Angelo State

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's University Women's Soccer student-athlete Clara Genitoni scored the first goal of her collegiate career in helping lift the Rattlers to a 3-1 win on Wednesday night over Angelo State.

Genitoni, a freshman from Turin, Italy, scored in the 67th minute, just 14 seconds after the Rambelles (3-6-2, 2-2-1 Lone Star Conference) posted their only finish off a free kick.

Genitoni took a pass from fellow freshman Malia Dominguez (Helotes, Texas) in the upper left corner of the box and lofted it into the upper right corner of the net for the 3-1 final.

Sophomore Sydney Varela (El Paso, Texas) got the scoring going for the Rattlers (5-2-4, 4-1-0 Lone Star) in the 30th minute, pinging a 35-yard shot off the crossbar into the net for the 1-0 lead and her fourth goal of the year.

Senior Juni Ejere (Weatherford, Texas) took a pass at midfield in the 64th minute and beat three defenders downfield, sneaking the ball under the diving arms of the goalkeeper from the middle of the box to put the Rattlers up 2-0. It is also the fourth goal of the season for Ejere and the 24th of her career, which moves her into a three-way tie for fifth on the St. Mary's career goals list.

The Rattlers once again were more aggressive in the second half, taking seven of their 10 shots after the break, while limiting the Rambelles to six for the contest.

The 4-1 start to conference play is the best since the Rattlers joined the Lone Star Conference and the best since the 2016 team started 3-0-2 in Heartland Conference action.

St. Mary's takes its two-match winning streak on the road, playing at Texas Woman's on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Pioneers won 1-0 at Eastern New Mexico earlier on Wednesday evening.
