Men's Soccer Starts Lone Star Play with a Draw Against LCU

SAN ANTONIO — Freshman Gael Gallegos scored two goals in the first 19 minutes of the St. Mary's University Men's Soccer Lone Star Conference opener against Lubbock Christian, but the Chaps were able to answer with two of their own for the draw on Wednesday night.

The match was extremely physical as there were 10 cards handed out and 21 other fouls called in the 90 minutes.

Gallegos, a first-year player from Laredo, Texas, is now tied for second on the team with four goals this season and he adds his first career brace as the Rattlers move to 6-2-2 overall and 0-0-1 in Lone Star play. He is the third different player to have multiple finishes in a contest, joining senior Cian Foley (Wexford, Ireland) and sophomore Alexander Carey (Glasgow, Scotland).

The 16th-ranked Rattlers outshot the Chaps (3-1-5, 0-0-1) 10-to-9 in the game and took nine corner kicks while limiting LCU to one.

Foley assisted Gallegos' first goal, finding him in the top corner of the box, where Gallegos did a 360 with the ball and found the back right of the next in the 11th minute for the 1-0 lead.

Eight minutes later, senior Sebastian Rivera (Laredo, Texas) lobbed a ball from the midfield circle, which Gallegos picked up at the penalty line and kicked into the bottom left corner of the goal for the 2-0 advantage.

The Rattlers take to the road, playing at Eastern New Mexico on Saturday at 8 p.m. CT/7 p.m. MT. StMU beat the Greyhounds 3-0 last week at home and ENMU lost to West Texas A&M in Canyon by the identical score on Wednesday night.
