Men's Soccer Wins Big Match on Senior Night

SAN ANTONIO — Back-to-back goals in the final 17 minutes by Santiago Nunez helped lift the St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team to a big 3-1 victory on Senior Night Saturday.

Nunez, a senior from Bogota, Colombia, struck in the 73rd minute to give the Rattlers (8-3-6, 2-1-5 Lone Star Conference) a 2-0 advantage. Sophomore Alexander Carey (Glasgow, Scotland) lobbed a ball downfield, which senior Josua Hall (Baiersbronn, Baden Wuerttemberg, Germany) flicked to Nunez for the goal.

Less than two minutes later, Texas A&M International (6-6-4, 2-4-2 Lone Star) scored for the 2-1 tally, but Nunez put the game away in the 86th minute with his third goal of the season. He took a pass from senior Lewis Nohar (Cumnock, Scotland) and broke away from the defense just past midfield, beating the goalkeeper for the 3-1 final.

Senior Cian Foley (Wexford, Ireland) put the Rattlers on the board first with his ninth goal of the season, making a penalty kick in the 23rd minute, capitalizing on the Dustdevils fouling senior Juan Jose Valdez Lopez (Asuncion, Paraguay) inside the box.

Senior keeper Andre Schlaefli (Katy, Texas) made four saves on the night, including two huge saves late as the Dustdevils tried to mount a comeback.

The Rattlers honored five seniors prior to the game in Hall, Jose Rivera (Laredo, Texas), Sebastian Rivera (Laredo), Mohammed Hani Shaik (Mirdif, Dubai, United Arab Emirates) and Gero Wolters (Niederkruchten, Germany). Both Foley and Jose Llano (Mexico City, Mexico) were honored last season before deciding to take advantage of the fifth year awarded by the NCAA. The seven played their final regular season game at Sigma Beta Chi field.

St. Mary's concludes the regular season Wednesday at #2 Midwestern State. The Mustangs have already clinched the Lone Star Conference Regular Season Championship.
