Men's Soccer Knots Score in Final Seconds at DBU for 1-1 Draw

DALLAS — With 36 seconds left on the clock, the St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team scored its lone goal of the night to earn a 1-1 draw at DBU.

Senior Gero Wolters (Niederkruchten, Germany) sent a long ball from past the center circle down the field into the goal box, which was headed by senior Cian Foley (Wexford, Ireland) over his left shoulder to freshman Gael Gallegos (Laredo, Texas) and he found the lower left corner of the net to devastate the Patriots (4-6-4, 1-2-3 Lone Star Conference) faithful.

It is the second-straight 1-1 draw for the Rattlers (7-3-5, 1-1-4 Lone Star) and the third in the last four matches.

"I'm really proud of our team's mentality tonight," said Head Coach Johnny Clifford. "We played some really good football, especially in the first half, but unfortunately somehow found ourselves down. We never gave up and managed to share the points tonight, which I thought was well deserved."

The two teams were scoreless in the first half, though each team took four shots and went back and forth. The Patriots found the goal first on a corner kick by Evan Pustejovsky that found Peyton Volker seemingly in the net in the 58th minute.

Five minutes later, it looked as if the Rattlers had equalized the score as Gallegos netted a shot on a rebound off a corner kick, but the Gold and Blue were whistled for offsides, keeping the lead with the Patriots until the final minute.

Senior goalkeeper Andre Schlaefli (Katy, Texas) recorded one save in facing 10 shots. He held off DBU, which took eight corners compared to only two for StMU.

The Rattlers face another set of Patriots on Wednesday, traveling to UT Tyler for a 5 p.m. kick. UTT came out of Canyon with a 2-2 draw against West Texas A&M earlier on Saturday.
