Men's Soccer Posts Another Draw in League Play

SAN ANTONIO — In a rivalry game, the records are thrown out and game plans often go by the wayside. Still, hopefully, the fans are entertained, which is what happened at Sigma Beta Chi on Wednesday night for the Battle of the Saints as St. Mary's University and St. Edward's University Men's Soccer teams battled to a 1-1 draw.

Shots were at a premium in the first half as the Rattlers (7-3-4, 1-1-3 Lone Star Conference) took four and the Hilltoppers (0-6-5, 0-1-3 Lone Star) took two in trying to get a read on each other's defenses.

The Rattlers struck first in the second half, scoring in the 62nd minute off a free kick. Freshman Gael Gallegos (Laredo, Texas) took the free kick from about 25 yards out, lofting it up into the box where junior Bradley Greene (Essex, England) was able to get his head on the ball and drive it into the net over the keeper.

The Hilltoppers evened the score in the 75th minute when Donovan Eerkes-McCarthy took a throw-in that was batted around and headed it into the back of the net for the 1-1 tie.

St. Mary's had several good looks in the final 15 minutes but could not capitalize, ending in a draw for the fourth time this season and the third time in league action.

The Rattlers head north for a Saturday night tilt at DBU at 7 p.m. The Patriots tied 2-2 at Eastern New Mexico on Wednesday night.
