Last Second Shot Does In Men's Basketball

SAN ANTONIO – Trailing by three with 9.3 seconds remaining, St. Mary's junior Tyler Caron drained a long three-pointer to knot the score at 60-60 but Angelo State managed a short jumper with four seconds left to pull off the victory.

Senior Emmanuel Ewuzie (San Antonio) tied his career-high with four blocked shots and narrowly missed a double-double, leading the game with 10 rebounds and adding eight points. Ewuzie has posted multiple blocks in six games and now has 32 on the year to tie for 10th on the school's single-season chart.

Senior Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) led the Rattlers (8-8, 5-6 Lone Star) with 13 points, while fellow guard Jalon Johnson (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) scored a dozen and led the game with four assists and three steals.

St. Mary's held the Rams (14-3, 10-1 LSC) to their lowest scoring output in conference play this season and second-lowest of the year. Kevon Godwin led them with 21 points, while Reggie Quezada and Devaughn Thomas each scored 11 and Fredelin De La Cruz had a team-best nine rebounds.

The Rattlers spotted the Rams 17 of the first 22 points on the night, but fought back to knot the score at 19-19 on a Jordan three-pointer with just under six minutes in the first half. The teams went back-and-forth the remainder of the half until Ewuzie gave the Rattlers the lead at halftime on a monster dunk at the buzzer on a dime by Johnson. Ewuzie and Jordan each had six points, while Ewuzie and senior Ryan Leonard (Kerry, Ireland) both had a game-high five rebounds.

The Rams edged the Rattlers in the second half, 36-to-32 with four ties and three lead changes including the final one with four seconds on the clock.

StMU hosts UT Permian Basin on Saturday at 3 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game. The Falcons lost 68-61 at St. Edward's on Thursday night.
