Women's Tennis Wins Eight Titles At Home Invitational

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Women's Tennis Team amassed six singles and two doubles titles at the annual St. Mary's Invitational over the weekend. Newcomers Kyndall Quiroz, Vanessa Rodriguez and Alessia Terlizzi, along with sophomore Callah Preti all went undefeated in singles play to highlight the opening weekend of the fall season.
 
Quiroz, a junior transfer from San Antonio, won the Group 2 bracket in Flight B, taking out a pair of opponents in straight sets and winning a three-set battle with Lone Star foe Milou ter Morsche from Texas A&M Kingsville 6-4, 4-6, 10-5.
 
Terlizzi, a freshman from Andria, Italy, won Flight A's Group 2 with two straight set wins and a 6-23, 2-6, 10-5 win over Trinity's Ruth Hill. Senior Angela Vargas (Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico) also won the group 1 round robin in Flight A, going 2-1 with wins over league foes Caroline Hudson from DBU and TAMUK's Alessa Maier. Vargas dropped a third-set tiebreaker to UIW junior Sofia Franco Salcedo. 

Rodriguez, a freshman from Laredo posted a 2-0 record to win the third group of Flight H. She dropped only three games in her pair of straight sets victories, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Allie Speyrer from Texas Lutheran and 6-0, 6-1 over Brisa Gonzales from OLLU
 
Preti, a sophomore from Liberty Lake, Wash., won two matches in straight sets and was up 4-3 in the first set when Grace Deininger from Schreiner had to retire from the match.
 
Freshman Katie Sergeeva (Viborg, Russia) lost her opening match 10-8 in the third-set doubles scoring tiebreaker, but bounced back to defeat the Speyrer sisters from Texas Lutheran and only dropped three games total in the four sets.
 
In Flight A of doubles, Quiroz teamed up with fifth-year senior Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) and the pair only dropped four games en route to the title in Group 2 and in the second group of Flight C, Preti and freshman Stela Sifuentes (Eagle Pass, Texas) won all three of their matches for the crown.
 
In addition to the seven titles, the Rattlers also posted five second-place finishes. See complete results below.
 
St. Mary's returns to the courts on Sept. 16 at the Pueblo Duals, hosted by Colorado State-Pueblo. The Rattlers will face Colorado Mesa, Colorado College and MSU Denver.
