ARLINGTON, Texas – St. Mary's Director of Tennis
Bill Macom may want to look into playing every match at the Arlington Tennis Center.
Â
Five months ago, the Women's Tennis Team won its first-ever Lone Star Conference Championship there while this weekend the Rattlers won a pair of singles and two doubles titles at the ITA South Central Regional.
Â
Senior
Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) posted a perfect 11-0 week, winning the Main Draw of singles with six victories. She and junior
Kyndall Quiroz (San Antonio) were a perfect 5-0 in doubles to win that title. Penshorn won four of the six matches in straight sets and in the finals against DBU's Angela Charles-Alfred, Penshorn bounced back after dropping the first set to win 6-3, 6-2 in the next two sets.
Â
"It's amazing that we have had a singles champion for three consecutive regionals with such depth in our conference," Macom stated. "We are definitely proud of each of our girls who played this weekend, especially since we swept all the events. They did a great job of taking our coaching and battling the heat. We definitely learned some more things about what to work on moving forward as well."
Â
Last year,
Maria Garcia won the singles title, while Penshorn won the title in 2019 as there was no tournament in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Â
In doubles, Penshorn and Quiroz won three straight sets via tiebreaker in the semifinals and finals, winning both against Madison Stafford and Jenna Payne from DBU, 7-6 (7-4) and then won the first set of the finals against Midwestern State's Skylar Minns and Micaela McSpadden by the identical score. In the second set the Rattlers pair won 6-1 for the title.
Â
Sophomore
Bailey Godwin (San Antonio) won the singles crown of the B Draw, wearing down her opponents in the tiebreakers. She won her first three all by the international doubles tiebreaker and then won 6-1, 6-1 over Minns from MSU in the finals, completing the 4-0 weekend.
Â
In the B Draw doubles, junior
Elena Munoz (Corregidora, Queretaro, Mexico) and sophomore
Elisa Rodriguez (Houston) won both of their matches en route to the title. The pair received a bye in the quarterfinals and then won 8-2 in the semifinals and 8-3 in the finals over Elise Carbo and Sarah Castleberry of DBU.
Â
Senior
Angela Vargas (Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico) reached the quarterfinals of the main draw singles, where she was forced to retire due to an injury sustained in the round of 16. Quiroz dropped her opening match, but advanced to the consolation semifinals and all 10 singles players entered won at least one match at the tournament.
Â
Penshorn and Quiroz have earned bids to the ITA Cup in Rome, Ga., while a few others will await to see if they receive an at-large berth to the end of fall tournament.
