RICHARDSON, Texas -- Senior
Lewis Wilson and juninor
Andre Schlaefli helped the St. Mary's Men's Soccer team lock down both opponents last week, earning the pair Lone Star Conference Defensive Player and Goalkeeper of the Week honors, respectively.
Wilson made his presence known in his first two games of the season, helping the Rattlers to a pair of shutouts against UT Tyler and Texas A&M-San Antonio. The Scottish native helped anchor a back line that held the league's second-highest scoring team to a 0-0 draw in Tyler to open the week. The Rattlers held the Patriots to just five shots on goal and are the only team to hold UTT scoreless this season. Wilson also scored a goal, heading in a corner kick in the 68th minute of the 5-0 shutout win in the team's season home opener against TAMUSA. It is the fifth goal of Wilson's career at StMU in his 62nd game.
Schlaefli was a rock in goal for St. Mary's, becoming the first keeper to shutout UT Tyler during a 2-0 week for the Rattlers. The junior faced and stopped all five shots on goal he faced from one of the top offenses in Division II, including four in the second half. He also played the first 45 minutes of StMU's commanding five-goal win over TAMUSA, earning the combined shutout alongside
Johnny Thurbin and
Eric Bunn. Schlaefli has a 0.44 goals against average this season, and a .913 save percentage, ranking third and second in the LSC.
