DENVER, Colo. – The St. Mary's Women's Tennis Team remained undefeated on the season with a narrow 4-3 victory at MSU Denver on Saturday afternoon.
The Rattlers (3-0) needed everything they had to pull off the victory after dropping the doubles point.
"We came up against a strong MSU Denver team that really took it to us in doubles," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "Fortunately, we did a very good job in singles across the board and battled on every court. Stela (Sifuentes) came up big for the clinch with a steady all-court game plan."
Senior
Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) won the opening set 6-4 and came through with a late break of serve to secure the match with a 7-5 second set. Junior
Kyndall Quiroz (San Antonio) also won in straight sets at No. 3, winning 6-4, 6-1.
Senior
Gabi Ioannou (Melbourne, Australia) rebounded nicely from a 6-4 setback in the first set to only lose three games the remainder of the match and win 6-0, 6-3. Freshman
Stela Sifuentes (Eagle Pass, Texas) clinched the decision for the Rattlers, winning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5.
Both
Angela Vargas and
Elisa Rodriguez fought valiantly at No. 1 and No. 6, respectively, falling in three sets. Vargas won the second-set tiebreaker 7-2 to force a third set, which she lost by a single break, 6-4. Rodriguez dropped the third-set doubles scoring tiebreaker 13-11.
The Rattlers return to action Sept. 22-24 at the ITA Fall South Central Regional, which takes the team back to where they won the 2022 Lone Star Conference Championship at the Arlington Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas.
