SAN ANTONIO – In a physical battle, the St. Mary's Women's Soccer Team dropped its first game of the season, falling 1-0 to rival St. Edward's in both teams' conference openers.
Â
The Rattlers (6-1, 0-1 LSC) outshot the Hilltoppers (5-1-1, 1-0 LSC), 11-9 and had five shots on goal compared to two. The two teams were whistled for 17 fouls and three yellow cards combined.
Â
Seniors
Megan Copeland (San Antonio) and
Jackie Miller (El Paso, Texas), along with sophomore goalkeeper
Rebecca Difronzo (Bari, Italy) all played the entire 90 minutes.
Â
Copeland had an opportunity to tie the game with a penalty kick in the 88th minute, but Hilltopper goalie Abby Carlson guessed correctly, diving to her right to block Copeland's shot.
Â
Each team had two corner kicks on the evening with St. Ed's taking both in the first half, while StMU took both in the second half.
Â
The Rattlers head out on the road, taking on Midwestern State on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Mustangs won 3-0 at Eastern New Mexico earlier on Wednesday and are now 3-2 on the season with three straight victories.
