SAN ANTONIO – St. Mary's Senior
Ashley Penshorn was named the South Central Region Senior of the Year, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Tuesday.

Penshorn, a senior from Montgomery, Texas ended the season ranked third in the region with an 18-6 record in duals, including an 8-1 mark in Lone Star Conference play. She had three wins over nationally ranked players and added an 18-7 record in doubles play.

Penshorn has chosen to take her "Covid Year" and will return for the extra season of eligibility granted by the NCAA. She has ranked in the top three in the region in each of the last three seasons, ending both 2020 and 2021 ranked first.

In the end of the season regional rankings, senior
Maria Garcia (Valencia, Spain) and junior
Angela Vargas (Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico) were ranked sixth and seventh, respectively, while the doubles tandem of
Bailey Godwin (San Antonio) and Vargas were third and Penshorn and senior
Alice Thane (Elloughton, East Yorkshire, England) ranked eighth.

The Rattlers advanced to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Championships, ending the year with a 21-4 dual record.
