Baseball Ends Season at #6 Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The St. Mary's Baseball team wrapped up its 2022 season on Saturday with a 23-5 loss at top-seeded and #6 Angelo State in the First Round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament.

Clay Bradford (Atoscocita, Texas) went 3-for-5 on the day, scoring two of the team's five runs, while Rudy Solis (El Paso, Texas) was 2-for-4.

Caden Floyd (Corpus Christi, Texas) took the loss for the Rattlers (23-29) after pitching two innings. The Gold & Blue used six other pitchers on the day and John Curtis (Athens, Tenn.) struck out four of the eight Rams (42-10).

After the Rams scored two in the top of the first, the Rattlers immediately responded. With one out, Elizondo singled to right, moved to second when Bradford did the same and scored on a single up the middle by Broughton. A fielder's choice off the bat of Juarez erased Broughton at second, but allowed Bradford to tie the score at 2-2.

ASU scored three in the second and were threatening for more when Goins caught a Ram attempting to steal second. With one out, Goins singled to center, moved to second on a groundout by Guajardo and scored on a single back up the box off the bat of Mares for the 5-3 tally.

The Rams continued to pile on the runs, scoring four in the third, eight in the fourth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh for the 21-3 score. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Broughton walked and hustled to third on an error by the first baseman off the bat of Juarez. Solis singled to right to score Broughton for the fourth Rattler run of the day.

ASU tacked on another two in the ninth and Bradford led off the ninth with a double to centerfield. He moved to third on a groundout by Broughton and sophomore Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas), pinch hitting, drove Bradford in with a single to left for the 23-5 final.

The second week of the Lone Star Tournament will take place at Angelo State as the four highest remaining seeds will play a double elimination tournament.
