Baseball Steals Win In Series Opener Against CU

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Baseball team put on a clinic on the base paths on Friday night, stealing a school record-tying nine bases in a 9-7 victory against Cameron.

Senior Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) also tied the individual single game steals record with three swipes – doing so for the second time in his career – and accomplishing the feat for the 11th time in school history. Mares was the only Rattler (13-22, 11-22 Lone Star Conference) with multiple steals in the game, but six others took an extra base and five moved up on wild pitches.

In his 10th start of the year, senior Steven Medrano (El Paso, Texas) improved to 4-3 on the hill. He pitched 7.1 innings, allowing only one earned run on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Fellow El Paso senior Anthony Chavez earned his first save of the season, working 1.2 frames with two unearned runs on three hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

In addition to the three steals, Mares was 2-for-3 on the night with three runs scored and three of the team's six RBIs. Senior Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) also scored three times with a pair of walks and one hit.

The Rattlers scored one run in each of the first two innings. The Aggies (11-22, 11-20 Lone Star) took a short-lived 3-2 advantage with one in the fourth and two in the top of the fifth. StMU answered with four in the fifth and one in the seventh. Both teams plated a pair in the eighth and Cameron added two in the ninth for the 9-7 final.

The two clubs return to the diamond at Dickson Stadium on Saturday for a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is slated for 2 p.m.
