Women's Tennis Victorious at UTPB

MIDLAND, Texas – For the 10th-straight meeting, the St. Mary's Women's Tennis team defeated UT Permian Basin, winning 6-1 on Thursday.

In the team's first Lone Star Conference road match, the Rattlers improved to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in conference action with the victory.

Head Coach Bill Macom shook up the doubles pairings and it seemed to pay off as the Rattlers won the first point of the day. Playing together for the first time this season, seniors Alice Thane (Elloughton, East Yorkshire, England) and Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) got things started with a 6-2 victory at number two doubles. UTPB won at No. 3, but freshman Bailey Godwin (San Antonio) and junior Angela Vargas (Del Rio, Texas) held on for the 6-4 win at No. 1.

Senior Marina Vigil (Gijon, Spain) only dropped two games to win the opening singles bout at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1. Junior Gabi Ioannou (Melbourne, Australia) won the first set 6-3, but stumbled by the same score in the second before rebounding with the 6-0 win the third set. Penshorn clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1.

Vargas kept things rolling with her 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 2 and sophomore Elena Munoz (Corregidora, Queretaro, Mexico) won the sixth-team point with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory at #4.

The Rattlers continue the road trip at Western New Mexico on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Mountain.
