Box Score ARLINGTON, Texas – On the morning where they climbed to No. 20 in the national rankings, the St. Mary's Women's Tennis Team took care of business in the Lone Star Conference Quarterfinals, defeating #72 DBU 4-0.
The Rattlers (18-3), seeded second at the tournament won their seventh-straight match, scooping up the doubles point to kick things off. The No. 2 duo of seniors
Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) and
Alice Thane (Elloughton, East Yorkshire, England) won 6-1, while junior
Angela Vargas (Del Rio, Texas) and freshman
Bailey Godwin (San Antonio) combined forces for the 6-4 victory at No. 1. The win suspended a tied battle on court three, sending the action to singles.
Thane wrapped up things quickly at No. 6 singles, dropping just two games for the second point of the morning, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Elise Carbo. Moments later, Penshorn won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 over Caroline Hudson.
Attention turned to courts three and four as both were closer to completion, and Vigil clinched the victory for the Rattlers with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Adriana Carpenter at No. 4.
Garcia won the opening set 6-2 at No. 3 and trailed 3-0 in the second set before bouncing back to win the next four games when the match was halted, 4-3. At No. 2, Vargas dropped the opening set 6-1, but was leading 3-2 in the second set and sophomore
Elena Munoz (Corregidora, Queretaro, Mexico) had the one set advantage at No. 5, 6-3, 2-3 when the matches concluded.
St. Mary's will face #56 UT Tyler in the semifinals, while top-seeded Cameron will square off with the winner of Texas A&M Kingsville and Midwestern State on the other side of the bracket.
