Box Score TYLER, Texas – With the 6-1 victory over UT Tyler on Saturday morning, the St. Mary's Women's Tennis Team finished in a three-way tie for the Lone Star Conference title, winning the first title for tennis since joining the league in 2020.

The Rattlers finished 8-1 in conference play, as did both Angelo State and Cameron. StMU defeated ASU and lost to CU, while the Rambelles defeated the Aggies to create the three-way tie.

As they've done throughout the majority of the season, the doubles teams set the tone for the remainder of the match as the Gold and Blue won all three sets.

Playing together for the first time since this fall, where they were a combined 7-1, the No. 1 team of senior
Maria Garcia (Valencia, Spain) and junior
Angela Vargas (Del Rio, Texas) won 6-3. Seniors
Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) and
Alice Thane (Elloughton, East Yorkshire, England) took home the 6-4 win at No. 2 and junior
Gabi Ioannou (Melbourne, Australia) and senior
Marina Vigil (Gijon, Spain) won at No. 3 by the score of 6-3.

Ioannnou pitched a shutout at No. 6 singles for the second point of the day, winning 6-0, 6-0. Thane followed suit early, winning the first set 6-0 and pulling out the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-1).Â

Garcia flipped Thane's scores, winning the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5) and set two, 6-0 at No. 3 singles to clinch the win for the Rattlers as they win their sixth-consecutive match. The Patriots got a win at No. 4 singles in three sets for their lone point, but StMU won the final two matches.

Vargas won at No. 2 singles with the scores of 6-2, 6-3 and Penshorn finished off the day with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 1.

The Rattlers will compete in the Lone Star Conference Championship April 28-30 at the Arlington Tennis Center in Arlington, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday. Spectators are permitted at the Arlington Tennis Center. Spectators are asked to enter the facility through pro shop main entrance. Spectators or fans are asked not to congregate in the pro shop.
