Women's Tennis Dominates Final Non-Conference Match

GEORGETOWN, Texas – In the final non-conference match of the regular season, the St. Mary's Women's Tennis team won 8-1 at Southwestern.
 
The Rattlers won their fifth-straight match and improved to 16-3 on the year, winning all six singles matches in straight sets on Monday evening.
 
StMU won two of the three doubles bouts for the early 2-1 advantage as the No. 2 team of seniors Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) and Alice Thane (Elloughton, East Yorkshire, England) won 8-5, while senior Marina Vigil (Gijon, Spain) and junior Gabi Ioannou (Melbourne, Australia) won 8-4 at No. 3.
 
Junior Angela Vargas (Del Rio, Texas) dropped only one game each set in her 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 to set the tone for singles play. Senior Maria Garcia (Valencia, Spain) wrapped up her match at No. 3 minutes later, winning 6-2, 6-1 and Penshorn clinched the victory for the Rattlers with her 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1.
 
Vigil also lost only three games, winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, while sophomore Elena Munoz (Corregidora, Queretaro, Mexico) won 6-1 in set one and turned it up in the tiebreaker of the second set to win 7-6 (4). Thane wrapped up the match winning 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6.
 
The Rattlers are currently tied for first in the Lone Star Conference standings with a record of 7-1 and play the final match of the regular season at UT Tyler on Saturday at 10 a.m. The Patriots are 4-4 in league action.
