Director of Tennis
Bill Macom shook up the doubles pairings again and it was the only point the Patriots (13-10, 3-5 Lone Star), ranked No. 69 this week, were able to score. Seniors
Maria Garcia (Valencia, Spain) and
Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas), playing together for the first time this year, won 6-2 at No. 2 for the Rattlers only doubles win.
Â
All six singles matches were won by the Gold & Blue. Both junior
Angela Vargas (Del Rio, Texas) and senior
Alice Thane (Elloughton, East Yorkshire, England) only dropped four games. Vargas won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2, while Thane flipped the scores for her 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5.
Â
Penshorn was the first Rattler to complete her match, winning 6-0, 7-5 at No. 1. Sophomore
Elena Munoz (Corrregidora, Queretaro, Mexico) clinched the win for the Rattlers with her 6-4, 6-4 straight sets win at No. 4.
Â
Junior Gabi Ioannaou (Melbourne, Australia) started strong with a 6-2 win in the first set and recovered well after dropping the second set 6-3 to win the international doubles tiebreaker 10-7 in the third set.
Â
Senior
Marina Vigil (Gijon, Spain) fought back after dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (2) to win the next two sets 6-0, 6-4 to complete the singles sweep.
Â
Garcia, Thane and Vigil were honored for their career accomplishments at the conclusion of the match. Penshorn has chosen to use her "Covid" year and will return for the 2023 season. The trio of seniors are all completing their degrees in business administration and have been key figures in the Rattlers success the last several years.Â
