Baseball Completes the Series Sweep Over Cameron

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Baseball Team completed the series sweep against Cameron, winning 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Dickson Stadium.

Senior Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) paced the Rattlers offense, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored, while junior catcher Brian Juarez (Corpus Christi, Texas) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The senior pitching duo of Adrian Gonzales (Pasadena, Texas) and Connor Schmidt (Devine, Texas) limited the Aggies to one run on six hits and the run was a solo home run in the first inning. Gonzales pitched the first six innings, walking just one and striking out four, while Schmidt pitched the last three frames and earned the win to move to 1-4 on the year. He walked three and struck out three, allowing just one hit.

The sweep is the first for the Rattlers this season as they improve to 16-22 on the year and 14-22 in Lone Star Conference play. They move into ninth place in the league standings with three series left on the regular season schedule. Eight teams advance to the conference tournament.

After the solo home run by the Aggies (11-25, 11-23 LSC) in the first by Ryan Carter, the score remained 1-0 for six innings until the Rattler broke onto the scoreboard in a big way with four runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Junior Rudy Solis (El Paso, Texas) singled to right center and was replaced on the base paths by pinch runner Jorge Cuevas (El Paso). Juarez singled through the right side. With one out, sophomore Trey Guajardo (San Juan, Texas) walked and Mares doubled to the gap in right center to score a pair. Sophomore Jake Elizondo (San Antonio) had a scary moment when he was hit by a pitch in the helmet, but was okay and continued on in the game. With two outs, Broughton hit a grounder to short stop and the first baseman dropped the throw, allowing two more runs to score for the 4-1 lead.

The Rattlers added a run in the eighth. With one out Juarez walked and caught everyone napping when he stole his first base of the season. Guajardo was hit by a pitch and Mares singled to left center to plate Juarez and make the final score 5-1.

St. Mary's hits the road next week, playing at UT Permian Basin. The series will start a day early due to Easter, beginning Thursday at 3 p.m.
