SAN ANTONIO – Last week, St. Mary's Director of Tennis
Bill Macom spoke about taking the experiences from the trip to Florida and putting them to use in Lone Star Conference play and that's exactly what the women did on Friday in the league opening 4-3 win over #29 Angelo State.
The Rattlers (9-2, 1-0 Lone Star) built momentum by winning the doubles point after both the No. 2 and 3 teams won with 6-4 scores.
Freshman
Bailey Godwin (San Antonio) and
Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) saw four consecutive breaks of serve to start the match at No. 2 before the Rattlers held and then broke the Rambelles (8-5, 1-1 Lone Star) for the 4-2 lead and they went on to win 6-4.
Penshorn, ranked 18th in this week's polls pitched a shutout at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 over #55 Valentina Gonzalez. Senior
Marina Vigil (Gijon, Spain) won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 and junior
Angela Vargas (Del Rio, Texas) pulled off the straight sets victory with a late break of serve 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4.
St. Mary's hosts Texas A&M Kingsville on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Rohrbach Tennis Stadium. Admission is free.
