Women's Tennis Set to Open Lone Star Action

NET POINTS

•    St. Mary's will begin Lone Star Conference action this weekend, hosting Angelo State on Friday and Texas A&M Kingsville on Saturday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. 

•    St. Mary's is 1-1 all-time against Angelo State and they are 6-1 against the Javelinas, including a perfect 3-0 record at home. A season ago, the Rambelles won 4-2, while the Rattlers defeated the Javelinas, 6-1.

•    On the spring trip to Florida, the Rattlers went 2-2 with wins over Indiana (Pa.), and #45 Florida Southern, both with the 5-2 score. They dropped a close 4-3 match at Embry-Riddle and were shutout by then-#3 Nova Southeastern. The Sharks have since climbed to the #1 team in the nation.

•    In the latest national rankings (March 24), the Rattlers have three ranked amongst the top 50 in #13 Maria Garcia, #18 Ashley Penshorn and #65 Marina Vigil.

•    Entering their third season in the Lone Star Conference, the Rattlers are 8-2 all-time. In the team's first season, 2020, they only played one league match before the season was cancelled.

•    Senior Ashley Penshorn climbed one more spot in the career singles dual wins list and is now sixth with 56. She passed Jamie Lee Denton (2013-16), who won 54. Next on Penshorn's target list is Ally Maciel (2015-19), who won 60 and ranks fifth.

•    Sophomore Elena Munoz moved into action at No. 1 doubles on the Spring Break trip, going 2-2 with partner Alice Thane

•    The St. Mary's team is looking to advance to its ninth-straight NCAA Regional appearance this season. The team has made the post-season every year since 2012-13, except for 2019-20 where the season was cut short.
