MELBOURNE, Fla. – The St. Mary's Women's Tennis Team ended its Spring Break trip on a high note with a 5-2 win over #45 Florida Southern.
Â
"I'm pretty happy going 2-2 on this trip against nationally ranked competition," Director of Tennis
Bill Macom said. "Especially since we played without one of our top singles and doubles players. Elena (Munoz) did a great job stepping into #1 doubles and all the girls battled well in their third sets in some pretty hot temperatures."
Â
Munoz, a sophomore from Corregidora, Queretaro, Mexico, partnered with senior
Alice Thane (Elloughton, East Yorkshire, England) to win 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, while sophomore
Gabi Ioannou (Melbourne, Australia) and senior
Marina Vigil (Gijon, Spain) won 6-2 at No. 3 to give the Rattlers the first point of the morning.
Â
Senior
Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) was dominant in a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles, while the other three wins for the Rattlers were all decided in three sets. Ioannou won sets one and three by the identical score of 6-3, and she dropped a tiebreaker in the second set. Vigil won the opening set by the tally of 6-2, dropped the second set 6-4 and got a late break of serve to win the set and match 7-5.
Angela Vargas, a junior from Del Rio, Texas, lost 6-4 in the opening set, but bounced back to win 6-1, 7-6 (4) in the final two sets to give StMU the 5-2 team win.
Â
"This was a great tune up to get us ready for conference play," Macom continued. "It showed us especially what needs to be done in practice moving forward."
Â
The Rattlers host Angelo State on Friday and Texas A&M Kingsville on Saturday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
