Women's Tennis Blanks Both Opponents To Kick Off Spring

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Women's Tennis team opened its 2022 season in completely dominating fashion, shutting out both Tabor and Schreiner on Saturday afternoon. The No. 14 Rattlers dropped only 15 games through 18 matches to begin the year 2-0.

St. Mary's will play Thursday, Friday and Saturday next week, traveling to Texas Lutheran before returning to host Trinity and St. Thomas, respectively. The home match on Friday against Trinity is scheduled for 3 p.m., while the Celts and Rattlers will square off at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

TABOR RECAP
The entire St. Mary's team – singles and doubles – lost only seven games in the nine matches as they dominated the Tabor College Bluejays, 7-0.

In doubles, both teams of Alice Thane (Elloughton, East Yorkshire, England) and Marina Vigil (Gijon, Spain) and Callah Preti (Liberty Lake, Wash.) and Elisa Rodriguez (Houston) shut out their opponents 6-0 for the first point of the match.

Vigil at No. 2, Thane at No. 3, Elena Munoz (Corregidora, Queretaro, Mexico) at No. 5 and Preti at No. 6 all double-bageled the opposition. Penshorn won at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2, while Rodriguez flipped the scores winning 6-2, 6-1.

SCHREINER RECAP
Just like in the morning match, the Rattlers (2-0) completely dictated the pace of play, dropping only eight games through nine matches, winning 7-0 against Schreiner.

Penshorn and junior Gabi Ioannou (Melbourne, Australia) won 6-0 at No. 2 doubles, while both the No. 1 team of senior Maria Garcia (Valencia, Spain) and freshman Bailey Godwin (San Antonio) and the No. 3 squad of Munoz and junior Angela Vargas (Del Rio, Texas) won 6-1.

In singles action, both Garcia (#1) and Ioannou (#3) won without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 4, 5 and 6 Vargas, Rodriguez and Preti only lost one game and Thane won a 6-2, 6-1 match at No. 2 for the sweep.
