Crooked Innings Hurt Baseball

SAN ANTONIO – A pair of very crooked innings hurt the St. Mary's Baseball team in a doubleheader against #17 Angelo State on Sunday.

The Rams (11-3, 11-3 Lone Star Conference) offense exploded for 11 runs in the seventh inning of game one for an 18-4 victory and scored 10 in the seventh frame of game two in a 16-0 win.

Sophomore catcher Devin Goins (San Antonio) was 2-for-3 in game one and helped the Rattlers (4-8, 2-8 Lone Star) take the early 1-0 lead in game one when he drove in junior Rudy Solis (El Paso, Texas). The six other hits by the Rattlers were by six different players, as five of the eight hits were extra bases – including a triple by Jake Elizondo (San Antonio). Junior Clay Bradford (Atoscocita, Texas) scored twice and junior catcher Brian Juarez (Corpus Christi, Texas) drew the only walk for the Rattlers.

Senior Mason Minister (San Antonio) lost his first game of the season, allowing five runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout in 3.0 innings. Four other pitchers saw action in the game for the Rattlers.

In game two, the Rattlers amassed four hits by four different spots in the lineup and all four hits were singles. The pitching staff struggled with control, walking eight, hitting five and throwing six wild pitches. Senior Anthony Chavez (El Paso) took the loss to go to 0-1 on the season. In four innings he gave up five runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

The two teams take the field on Monday for a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is slated for 1 p.m.
