SAN ANTONIO – UAFS made its free throws down the stretch to stave off a charging St. Mary's Women's Basketball team on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions (7-13, 5-6 Lone Star Conference) were 9-for-10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to hold on for the 80-72 win.
The Rattlers (2-21, 1-11 LSC) had four players score in double figures, led by 17 from junior
Sydney Hardeman (Allen, Texas). Senior forward
Hannah Wilson (Fredericksburg, Texas) chipped in 12 and a team-high eight rebounds, while freshman
Faith Phillips (San Marcos, Texas) and sophomore
Bella Hughes (Argyle, Texas) each chipped in 10. Freshman guard
Ariana Rosado (Round Rock, Texas) scored a career-high eight points with a career-best six assists in just under 22 minutes of play.
Paige Elston did the most damage for the Lions, scoring 25 points with five assists and four steals, while Riley Hayes (14) and Mar'Shalia Lollie (12) each added double digits.
The Rattlers held the 18-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, but UAFS outscored StMU 29-16 in the second stanza and held onto the lead, despite the Rattlers outscoring them 21-17 in the fourth quarter.
St. Mary's also had a good day at the free throw line, making 11-of-12 attempts, including a perfect 6-for-6 by Phillips.
St. Mary's hosts Angelo State in the final rescheduled game of the year, playing Monday at 3:30 p.m. inside Bill Greehey Arena.
INDIVIDUAL PLAYER & TEAM NOTES
- Freshman guard Ariana Rosado tallied career-highs in both points and assists with eight and six, respectively. She also blocked the first shot of her collegiate career.
- For the second-straight game, the Rattlers blocked six shots in a game, tying for the second-highest total of the season. Hannah Wilson swatted two, while four others each had one.
- Sydney Hardeman added five three-pointers to her total, giving her 65 for the season, which is the fifth-highest total in school history. She is now just 12 away from tying the single-season record of 77 by Meosha Nash from 2002-03.
- Junior Briley Perkins (Houston) recorded a career-high six assists as the Rattlers had 19 assists on 26 shots.
