SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Women's Tennis team was pushed a little harder on Friday than they had been in its first three matches of the season, but the Rattlers still won 6-1 in an exhibition match against cross-town foe, Trinity.
Â
The Rattlers (3-0) took the early lead by winning two of three doubles matches for one team point. Seniors
Alice Thane (Elloughton, East Yorkshire, England) and
Marina Vigil (Gijon, Spain) won 6-1 at No. 1, while senior
Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) and redshirt freshman
Bailey Godwin (San Antonio) pulled out the 6-4 win at No. 2. The Trinity duo of Ellie Hughes and Samantha Miller won 6-3 at No. 3.
Â
Senior
Maria Garcia (Valencia, Spain) won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1, while Penshorn dropped only two games at the second position, winning 6-2, 6-0.
Â
Junior
Gabi Ioannou (Melbourne, Australia) got an early break of serve for the 2-0 lead in the first set at No. 5, but Jenna Lee broke back to win three straight games and take a 3-2 advantage. After trading holds and breaks for the 5-4 Lee lead, Ioannou held, broke serve and held again for the 7-5 win. She had an easier time in set two winning 6-1.
Â
Finishing at about the same time, Thane won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 and junior
Angela Vargas (Del Rio, Texas) got the late break to win 7-5 in the first set and bageled her opponent in the second set, winning 6-0.
Â
The lone Trinity point came at No. 3 – a true dogfight between Vigil and Ruth Hill. Hill won the opening set 6-3, but Vigil came back to win by the identical score in the second set. Hill won three of the first four games in the third and deciding set, but Vigil battled back to tie the set at 4-4 before Hill broke to win 6-4.
Â
The Rattlers will play their third match in three days, hosting St. Thomas on Saturday at Noon. Admission is free to matches at Rohrbach Tennis Stadium.
