Women's Basketball In Another Close Battle

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Women's Basketball couldn't overcome a hot shooting start from beyond the arc by Texas A&M Kingsville on Friday afternoon, falling 60-53.

The Rattlers (5-6, 1-4 Lone Star Conference) forced 22 turnovers and collected 14 steals – including a career-high six swipes by junior Teanna Huggins (San Antonio). The team also turned the ball over only 11 times – the second-lowest total of the year.

Huggins had the best game of her St. Mary's career as she added eight points and a game-high eight rebounds. Her six steals are the most in a game for a St. Mary's player since Jan. 11, 2020 when Jessica Barbosa recorded six against Midwestern State.

Freshman Gabby Elliott (San Antonio) came off the bench to lead all scorers with 15, while junior Ariah Powell (Detroit, Mich.) added 10 – all in the fourth quarter.

Veyda Lake led the Javelinas (6-5, 3-2 Lone Star) with 13 points, while Brianna Pena added 11 and Mia Rivers had a game-high seven assists.

TAMUK jumped out to an early 13-4 lead, but the Rattlers fought back, taking a one-point lead, 37-36 on a Natalia Ryng (Gdynia, Poland) three-pointer – her first of the season. The triple capped a nine-point scoring run for the Rattlers which was the longest streak for either team in the game.

St. Mary's hosts Texas A&M International on Sunday, January 1 at 1 p.m. The Dustdevils won 62-54 at St. Edward's earlier on Friday.
