Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

New Year's Comeback by WBB Spoiled by Local Product

SAN ANTONIO – The first game of the 2023 calendar year was spoiled for the St. Mary's Women's Basketball team by a hometown freshman at Texas A&M International Meli Hornedo scored 20 in the 62-59 Dustdevil victory on Sunday afternoon.

Hornado, who attended Antonian College Prep in San Antonio, scored a career-high 20 as the Dustdevils (8-4, 3-3 Lone Star Conference) fended off a furious comeback by the Rattlers (5-7, 1-6 Lone Star).

St. Mary's outscored TAMIU 34-25 in the second half and did a great job of rebounding from a tough-shooting first quarter.

Freshman Gabby Elliott (San Antonio) scored a team-best 16 points in the first start of her career, while Teanna Huggins (San Antonio) continued a solid weekend with 13 points, a team-high seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Junior Reyelle Frazier (Tacoma, Wash.) led all players with four steals and tied for game-high honors with four assists and both Briley Perkins (Houston) and Natalia Ryng (Gdynia, Poland) chipped in nine points each.

Hornado was joined in double figures in scoring by Raiana Brown (16) and Emily Swiercz (12) for the Dustdevils, while Marija Bakic had a game-high nine rebounds.

The Rattlers added another 11 steals to their total and had 14 assists on 22 made baskets, using good ball movement in the second half to mount their comeback.

St. Mary's heads out on the road for four straight, beginning at Texas Woman's on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
