SAN ANTONIO – The comeback for St. Mary's Women's Basketball fell just short on Saturday afternoon against Eastern New Mexico, 72-65.
Â
The Rattlers (5-2, 1-1 Lone Star Conference) trailed by as many as 16 midway through the fourth and used an 11-point run beginning with a three-pointer by junior
Ariah Powell (Detroit, Mich.) at 2:56 to cut the deficit to three with 49 ticks left, but the Greyhounds (4-2, 2-0 LSC) made five of six free throws down the stretch to hang on for the victory.Â
Â
Powell hit four three-pointers en route to a career-high 20 points to lead the Gold & Blue. Senior
Tonia Bilic (Zagreb, Croatia) chipped in 12 points and led the Rattlers with six rebounds.Â
Â
Junior
Teanna Huggins (San Antonio) led the game with five assists, while senior
Natalia Ryng (Gdynia, Poland) had a team-best three steals.
Â
For the first time since the season opener, the Rattlers were out-rebounded in a game, as ENMU had 41 compared to 33. The bench scored half of the team's points, accounting for 32 of the 65. It snaps a four game winning streak for the Rattlers and evens their conference record at 1-1.
Â
St. Mary's shot .456 for the game, the second-highest percentage of the season, trailing only the 50 percent in the win over North American on Nov. 22.Â
Â
The Rattlers take to the road, playing at Cameron on Dec. 10 at 1 p.m. and Midwestern State on Dec. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
