SAN ANTONIO – Scoring six of her eight points in the overtime periods, including four in the final four seconds, St. Mary's sophomore
Faith Phillips helped lift the Women's Basketball team to a win over Western New Mexico in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams, 76-73.
Phillips (San Marcos, Texas) drove the lane with 3.2 seconds remaining to give the Rattlers (5-1, 1-0 Lone Star) at 74-72 lead and then with 0.8 on the clock she was fouled grabbing a rebound on the defensive end of the floor and iced the game with both free throws for the victory.
Freshman forward
Gabby Elliott (San Antonio) had the biggest game of her young career, scoring 20 points – including her first three-pointer – and she blocked a career-high three shots in 25 minutes.
Senior
Tonia Bilic (Zagreb, Croatia) recorded her first double-double of the season and the second of her career with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. She also blocked a career-best three shots as the Rattlers collected eight swats on the night.
The Rattlers spotted the Mustangs (1-3, 0-1 Lone Star) an eight-point lead in the third-quarter before they came storming back and tied things to force overtime. After shooting just .267 during the third stanza, StMU shot .429 in the final quarter.
The win is the first in a Lone Star Conference opener for the Rattlers as they dropped the first contest each of the last three years.
