SAN ANTONIO – Needing at least a draw to clinch the Lone Star Conference regular season championship and the right to host the conference tournament, the St. Mary's Men's Soccer team posted a 1-1 draw against UT Tyler on Senior Night to win its second title in four seasons.
Prior to the match, the Rattlers (10-0-6, 6-0-2 LSC) honored six seniors in
Jalil Blalock,
Ariel Cardozo,
Deni Cresto,
Cian Foley,
Jose Llano and
Leonardo Velazco. The team also honored
Lewis Wilson a season ago before he chose to come back for his fifth year.
The Patriots (7-5-3, 2-4-2 LSC) broke onto the scoreboard first, scoring on a free kick by Zach Panagiotou that scooted into the top corner of the net less than a minute before halftime.
After his initial shot in the 61st minute hit the cross bar, sophomore
Bradley Greene (Essex, England) took a second shot that rebounded off the goalkeeper right to junior
Dani Gimena (Ondara, Alicante, Spain) who punched it in with his left foot for his third goal in as many games.
The Rattlers will host the conference championship, beginning on Nov. 4 at Sigma Beta Chi, but first they conclude the regular season on Saturday at Texas A&M International. The Dustdevils lost 3-2 at Eastern New Mexico earlier on Wednesday night.
