SAN ANTONIO – It has now been 1,095 minutes since a team has scored a goal during live play against the eighth-ranked St. Mary's Men's Soccer team, as they shut out another opponent on Wednesday evening, defeating Midwestern State 2-0.
Â
It was the third consecutive clean sweep for the Rattlers (9-0-5, 5-0-1 Lone Star Conference) and the 11th in the past 12 matches as UT Permian Basin scored on a penalty kick back on Oct. 8.
Â
Wednesday was a physical affair as the two teams were called for a combined 33 fouls and each keeper made one save as a pair of midfielders found the back of the net for the Rattlers.
Â
With a little over two minutes remaining in the first half, junior
Dani Gimena (Ondara, Alicante, Spain) scored his first goal of the year on a rebound off a blocked shot by junior
Juan Valdez (Ascuncion, Paraguay) for the game-winning goal.
Â
Six minutes into the second half, senior
Sebastian Rivera (Laredo, Texas) took a free kick that found a streaking
Deni Cresto (Curitiba, Parana, Brazil) for the second goal of the evening and his second of the year.
Â
The win snaps a three-match losing streak against the Mustangs and is just the fifth in the 39-game history, however four of the victories for the Rattlers have come since the start of the 2019 seeason.
Â
St. Mary's faces another tough test on Saturday as it travels to Lubbock Christian for a 5 p.m. kickoff. The Chaps are 4-1-1 in league action after beating Texas A&M International 2-1 on Wednesday night.
