ODESSA, Texas – In the 19th minute, St. Mary's freshman
Sydney Varela found the back of the net and it was enough to give the Women's Soccer team a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at UT Permian Basin.
Â
Varela, a true freshman from El Paso, Texas, scored her third goal and lifted the Rattlers to their 10th win (10-3-2, 4-3-2 Lone Star Conference) of the year, tying for the most in a season since the 2005 team won 13. The win is the third in the team's last five matches as the team is 3-1-1 with only a loss to top-ranked DBU.Â
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Rebecca Difronzo (Bari, Italy) made three more saves on Saturday, giving her 37 on the season.
Â
The Rattlers remain on the road, playing at West Texas A&M on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Rattlers currently have 14 points in conference play (three for each win, one for each tie) and sit in a three-way tie for third-place. The Buffs are one of the two teams tied with the Rattlers, along with St. Edward's.
