PORTALES, N.M. – With a small shrug and a smirk to her teammates after scoring her fourth game-winning goal of the season, senior
Megan Copeland and the St. Mary's Rattlers held off Eastern New Mexico the remainder of the way, winning 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Copeland, a San Antonio native, took a corner kick in the sixth minute and the ball sailed into the upper left corner of the goal for her fifth score of the season.Â
Â
The win improves the Rattlers record to 8-2-1 on the season and is the sixth clean sheet of the year for the club, which is also 2-2-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
Â
An own goal by the Greyhounds (3-7-0, 1-4 Lone Star) in the 20th minute secured the victory for St. Mary's.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Rebecca Difronzo (Bari, Italy) made three saves – all in the second half as the Greyhounds attempted their comeback.Â
Â
Copeland, senior defender
Jackie Miller (El Paso, Texas), sophomore midfielder
Eliza Merrion (Park City, Utah) and sophomore defender
Nayeli Celedon (San Antonio) all played the entire 90 minutes as they limited ENMU to one shot in the first stanza.
Â
The Rattlers travel to Texas A&M International on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. kickoff. The Dust Devils tied Midwestern State on Saturday and 0-3-3 in conference play.
