THE RECAP
The Rattlers dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to DBU in overtime on Saturday night. Despite taking an early lead, the Patriots battled back and topped the Rattlers with a golden goal in extra time.
Andrick Ferrer found the back of the net for the Rattlers in the first half, giving St. Mary's the first lead of the game. St. Mary's dominated time of possession and outshot DBU, but allowed the Patriots to fight back in the last 45 minutes. In the second half, DBU benefited from excellent passing to find the equalizer.
Both teams fought hard through 90 minutes and the Rattlers found themselves in their first overtime of the season. While St. Mary's held the offensive edge through much of the contest, the Patriots strung several passes together and ultimately saw Ethan Unger fire home the game winner.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- The Rattlers outshot the Patriots, 16-12, but only registered one shot in OT.
- St. Mary's still owns the series lead over DBU, 26-7, in a history that goes back to 1991.
- Ferrer has found an offensive spark, scoring in back-to-back games.
HEAD COACH JOHNNY CLIFFORD ON THE OUTCOME
"I felt like we dominated the first half. We really need to be more clinical in the final third. Only being up 1-0 at halftime led to us letting them back in it. I think they wanted it more tonight. We need to be honest with ourselves and get back to work. These things happen, but we will get back to work on Monday."
