Women's Tennis Sees Success At Javelina Fall Invitational

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The St. Mary's Women's Tennis team had a great weekend at the Javelina Fall Invitational with senior Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) and sophomore Elena Munoz (Corregidora, Queretaro, Mexico) winning singles titles.
 
Penshorn defeated a trio of Division I opponents en route to the title. She defeated Marjorie Souza from Texas-Rio Grande Valley in straight sets and then won a pair of straight-set matches over Prairie View A&M athletes. Munoz, competing in the orange bracket, won her first two matches in straight sets over DI foes and then won a hard-fought three-set battle against Jana Knaab from the Javelinas, 6-3, 3-6, 11-9.
 
Both senior Alice Thane (Elloughton, East Yorkshire, England) and senior Maria Garcia (Valencia, Spain) reached the finals, but did not play against each other. The doubles teams of junior Angela Vargas (Del Rio, Texas) and Garcia and Munoz and freshman Valeria Idalia Navarro-Cavazos (San Antonio) also reached the finals in the Gold bracket, but did not compete against their teammates.
 
Junior Gabi Ioannou (Melbourne, Australia) placed third in the Red singles, winning against Alessa Maier from Texas A&M-Kingsville in three sets.
 
"I thought the girls stayed really focused dealing with the extreme heat," said Director of Tennis Bill Macom. "They had quite a few three-set singles matches which should prep them for the ITA's."
 
The Rattlers will compete at the ITA South Central Regional Sept. 23-25. The tournament will be hosted by Angelo State.
