SAN ANTONIO - Despite a five-plus hour weather delay, the St. Mary's Women's Tennis team came out and took care of the Western New Mexico Mustangs on Friday afternoon, winning 6-1 in their final home match of the season at Rohrbach Tennis Stadium.
The match was originally scheduled for 9:00 a.m. but was pushed to 2:40 p.m. due to wet courts and weather in the area.
Abigail Csengery and
Grace Bell, the two seniors for the women's program, picked up the first win of the day for the Rattlers as the duo won 6-0 at the No. 3 line.
Ashley Penshorn and
Maria Garcia clinched the doubles point for St. Mary's winning 6-2 at the No. 1 line.
Marina Vigil and
Alice Thane won at No. 3 to sweep the doubles competition.
Garcia was the first Rattler to reach 16 wins on the year as she was the first to finish in singles action, winning, 6-1, 6-1. Vigil made it 3-0 St. Mary's with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 3 line.
In a hard-fought match at the no. 1 line, Penshorn joined Garcia at 16 wins as the senior won the first set 6-0. After dropping the second set, 6-3 Penshorn battled to win the third set 7-5 to clinch the win for St. Mary's.
Gabi Ioannou cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 line while Csengery earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory in her final match at Rohrbach Tennis Stadium. The Mustangs lone victory came at the No. 6 line as senior
Grace Bell lost a hard-fought match in a third-set tie-break.
The Rattlers will play their final two regular season next weekend as they travel to Midwestern State on Friday, April 23 and DBU on Saturday, April 24.
