SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Women's Tennis program took on The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) in a doubleheader match at Rohrbach Tennis Stadium on Monday. After dropping the first match, the Rattlers rebounded to win the second against the Vaqueros.
URTGV took the opener, 4-3 and St. Mary's returned to take the nightcap, 4-3.
In the first match of the day, the Vaqueros took the first doubles match on the No. 2 line, winning 6-0.
Ashley Penshorn and
Maria Garcia evened up the doubles competition, winning 6-2 at the No. 1 line. Elena Munoz and
Abigail Csengery lost a close one at the No. 3 line, 7-6, giving UTRGV the doubles point.
After the Vaqueros won the first singles match at the No. 6 line, Garcia pulled St. Mary's back to even with a 7-6, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. Penshorn put the Rattlers in front with a 7-6, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles. With a win at no. 4 singles, the Vaqueros were a win away from taking the match. The match was clinched at No. 3 singles for UTRG.
Marina Vigil dropped the first set 6-3 but was able to force a third set with a 6-2 victory in the second. Vigil battled but fell just short, falling 6-4 in the third. Elena Munoz was the final singles match of the night, defeating her opponent, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
In the nightcap, UTRGV once again took the double point, winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 lines.
Garcia took the first point for the Rattlers in singles action, winning 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 line. UTRGV climbed in front with wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots. Penshorn kept the Rattlers alive with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1. Munoz and Vigil went to three sets just as they did in the first match of the day. Munoz was the fifth singles match to finish, making it a 3-3 match. This time, Vigil was on the right side of a 6-4 decision in the third set to clinch a 4-3 victory for the Rattlers.
The Rattlers will return to action this Friday as they host Air Force at the Rohrbach Tennis Stadium.
