SAN ANTONIO – Two goals in the second half proved to be the difference on Tuesday night as the St. Mary's Men's Soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over the Midwestern State Mustangs at Sigma Beta Chi Field. The Rattler improve to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
The St. Mary's attack was patient and efficient against the Mustangs defense. The Rattlers took just nine shots but six of them were on frame. The Mustangs took 13 shots but only managed to put four on net.
Three of Midwestern State's four shots on goal came in the first half as the Mustangs attack controlled the majority of the first 45 minutes.
Youssef Mouaddib registered the Rattlers only shot on goal in the first frame, which came in the 17th minute.
St. Mary's keeper, Andrew Schlaefli was impressive in his third start of the year. The freshman recorded his third clean sheet, making a career-high four saves.
Liam Morrison's left foot was the difference in the match as the senior scored his second goal of the season. Morrison took a free kick just outside of the box and bent it around the Mustang wall, beating the keeper, just inside the far post. Morrison now leads the squad with four points. The game-winner is Morrison's second of the season.
Less than 10 minutes later, the Rattlers high press forced the Mustang keeper to give the ball away, resulting in a St. Mary's throw-in. On the throw-in,
Max De Leon gained possession and dribble the ball all the way to the end line before crossing it into the box.
Cian Foley was waiting on the other end of the cross and buried it in the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
The Rattlers will have a week to prepare for Lubbock Christian as the two teams will meet in Lubbock next Tuesday, March 23.
