KINGSVILLE – Despite out-hitting Texas A&M-Kingsville 25-19 over the doubleheader, the St. Mary's Baseball team was unable to come away with a victory, falling 8-7 in 11 innings and 7-6 on Saturday.
All seven hitters that started in both games recorded multiple hits on the day, led by sophomore
Brandon Broughton (Corpus Christi, Texas) who went 4-for-9 with two doubles and a home run, as well as three runs scored.
The Rattlers (9-9, 7-8 Lone Star Conference) led early in the opening game and the Javelinas (9-3, 9-3 Lone Star) came back to force extra innings, where they plated two in the 11
th after the Rattlers scored one in the top half for the 8-7 score. In the nightcap, the Rattlers took a 3-0 advantage before TAMUK went ahead 7-4. StMU scored two in the ninth, but couldn't get the tying run across the plate for the 7-6 loss.
The two teams also combined for an uncharacteristic 12 errors, four for StMU and eight for TAMUK over the 20 innings. The difference in the contests was the Javelinas hit five home runs compared to just one for the Rattlers.
Relief pitchers
Johnny Panatex (1-1) and
Collin Storms (1-3) each were credited with a loss. Zach De la Garza (San Antonio) started game one, giving up six runs on eight hits with three walks and a season-high eight strikeouts, while
Dylan Bells (Regina, Saskatchewan) was on the hill at the start of game two, allowing one earned run (four total) on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.
St. Mary's returns home next weekend for a three-game series with St. Edward's, beginning on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Rattlers are 5-1 within the friendly confines of Dickson Stadium in 2021.
